Ian was an abalone diver for 22 years, in the latter part of which he was President of the Victorian Abalone Divers Association and industry representative on the Fisheries Management Committee. Whilst holding these representative positions he was a major contributor to the establishment of transferable fishing entitlements and quotas for the abalone fishing industry.
During the above time another strong interest was a successful horse stud, standing two stallions to as many as fifty outside mares.
He is a graduate of the University of Melbourne and the Leo Cussen Institute " Practical Training Course ". Before coming to the Bar, Ian worked for a short time as a solicitor for the Victorian Aboriginal Legal Service in the criminal section.
