Cahal is a graduate of the Queen's University, Belfast in Northern Ireland and studied for his Bar Exams in Northern Ireland. He undertook further legal studies at the University of Melbourne.
From 1995 he worked at the Federal Court of Australia and from 1997 to 1999 he was Associate to Justice Ryan of the Federal Court.
He has worked as a volunteer at the Fitzroy Legal Centre in Melbourne.
Member of the Victorian Bar Council 2004-2005; 2005-2006; 2006-2007
Member of the Asylum Seeker Subcommittee of the Legal Assistance Committee of the Bar.
