Areas of Practice:
Background
Through his articles and time as a solicitor, Steven developed particular expertise in the areas of:
commercial law (including commercial litigation);
property law (including domestic building legislation and retail leases);
indirect and State taxation (GST, stamp duty, land tax and taxation on trusts); and
wills and trusts (estate planning, testamentary trusts, discretionary trusts, unit and fixed trusts).
Steven has also developed a thorough comprehension of business operation through acting for small and medium-sized enterprises and joint venture partnerships, and in providing complex advice on tax-effective restructuring, corporate reconstruction, and commercial transactions.
Type of practise
Steven has a broad practise at the Bar, with a particular focus on commercial disputes, property law, contract law and State taxation. He also practises in all aspects of criminal law in both the County and Magistrates’ Courts.
Steven’s advocacy and pleadings work is focussed principally on a broad range of commercial disputes in the Supreme Court and County Court. He also appears in the VCAT and the Magistrates’ Court in commercial and civil matters.
Steven’s written advice and opinion work is largely focussed on State taxation, including drawing and settling objections to tax assessments and advising on the tax consequences of property transactions.
Teaching / academic roles
Steven teaches State Revenue Law for the Leo Cussen Institute, and lectures regularly for the Taxation Institute of Australia in subjects such as structures, individual taxation, and loans (among others). He has also been employed sessionally for Civil Procedure at Monash University.
Pro bono work
Steven’s practise is enriched through his acceptance of pro bono referrals through the Public Interest Law Clearing House (PILCH) / Victoria Bar Legal Assistance Scheme (VBLAS) and his appearances as lecturer and chair for Legalwise seminars. Steven is also a volunteer for the Cancer Council of Australia.
