Areas of practice
Following the completion of his Articles Oliver was called to the Bar and has subsequently developed an extensive generalist practice in most areas of law, including: contract, tort, taxation, insurance, building and construction, residential tenancy, family and de facto, criminal, government, aged care, consumer credit, employment, intellectual property, bankruptcy, insolvency, banking and finance, corporations, property and equity.
Oliver has appeared in the Supreme Court, County Court, Magistrates' Court, Federal Court, Federal Magistrates Court and VCAT and in addition to his appearance work has considerable experience in drafting statements of claim, defences, affidavits and detailed advises.
Teaching/academic roles
Oliver has lectured Taxation Law at Victoria University, Civil Procedure at La Trobe University and has been employed seasonally to assist with Civil Procedure at Monash University.
Oliver has also worked as a presenter for Television Education Network and delivered seminars at the Royal Melbourne Hospital in the area of medical negligence.
Pro bono work
Oliver has also been involved as a volunteer with the Brunswick Community Legal Centre, the Bushfire Assistance Scheme, the Public Interest Law Clearing House/Victorian Bar Legal Assistance Scheme and also assisted on the Young Lawyers Committee of the Law Institute of Victoria and as a judge for various Monash University legal competitions.
University background
Oliver holds a Bachelor of Economics, Bachelor of Laws with Honours and a Masters of Commercial Law. Oliver was the winner of the negotiation competition and a finalist in the mooting competition. Oliver held the activities and careers portfolios on the Law Student's Association and was the President of the Motor Sports Club.
